What initially drew you to learn Contact Improvisation (CI)?
Hai Linh: Before I began studying CI, I had experience with movement meditation. It was fascinating because I could feel my body’s desire to move, and it would move freely without me consciously knowing much about dance or movement. This curiosity about the natural movement in my body is what led me to explore CI further.

Do you have any memorable experiences from practicing CI?
Hai Linh: It’s been a long time, so I don’t recall any specific moments in detail. But I do remember there were many instances of feeling deeply "in the flow," just going with whatever happened naturally.
That sounds wonderful! I think many people might feel a bit shy at first, especially with the idea of physically connecting with strangers. Did you experience any mental barriers or reservations?
Hai Linh: Actually, I didn’t feel any barriers. The comfort I received right away helped me a lot to calm down my inner worries.

During those moments when you were in the flow, did you experience any interesting emotions or sensations?
Hai Linh: I felt free, and I noticed that my mind just sort of switched off—which is rare for me because I’m usually a very “in-my-head” person! During CI, I felt like parts of me were being released: sometimes it was anger, other times it was sadness or loneliness, and at other times, it was love and freedom. Everything just existed in the moment, very much “at the moment.”
That’s amazing. It seems like CI has given you a deeper understanding of your body and emotions. Did it help you discover anything else about yourself?
Hai Linh: Yes, CI helped me realize certain limiting beliefs I held. For instance, I used to think I wasn’t strong enough to support someone else because I’m not very physically strong. But through CI, I learned to trust both myself and others in the practice. I became more connected with my own body, and I noticed that I also became more sensitive in perceiving and observing others through movement.
